Frequently Asked Questions

Why do I need this workshop?

Maternity photography today goes far beyond a single session. Expanding into maternity, motherhood, and newborn photography allows photographers to build long-term client relationships and increase revenue through complete storytelling.

Many clients return to document every stage—from pregnancy to baby’s first year—creating consistent bookings and stronger sales opportunities. Limiting your work to one style can mean missing out on growth, repeat clients, and a more profitable photography business.

I don’t have a big studio — how will this workshop help me promote my services?

We focus on simple sets and backdrops that you can easily replicate, even in your own living room or a small space. Minimalist and simple photos often sell better than images with elaborate setups, proving that great lighting, posing, and connection matter more than the size of your studio.

Do you offer payment plan options?

Yes! We offer Affirm extended plans (soft credit check, ~90% approval, 12–24 months, often 0% interest). You can also request to include travel expenses with Affirm (we reimburse the difference) or use our in-house plan split into two payments.

Do I need to be a professional photographer?

No! We will cover everything from posing to lighting and directing, but you should know how to operate your camera and adjust settings.

How many photos will I have at the end of the workshop?

This is a portfolio-building workshop with immersive learning — by the end, you will have enough polished images to build a portfolio on your website and market your services to clients.

What is the best airport and recommended hotel?

The closest airport is Norman Y. Mineta San Jose International Airport (SJC), located about 15–20 minutes from our studio at 941 E Charleston Rd, Suite 112, Palo Alto, CA 94303. San Francisco International Airport (SFO) is also a convenient option, approximately 25–30 minutes away.

What do I need to bring to the workshop?

Just your camera and any lenses you have — we recommend a 28–70mm, 50mm, or 70–200mm, plus SD cards, a battery, and a backup battery.

How many models will be in the workshop?

We will work with 1–2 models. If a pregnant model is not available, a model with a realistic maternity belly will be provided for demonstration and practice.

Is this workshop in person?

Yes, this is an in-person workshop taught by Esther Kay.

How many students will attend the workshop?

We limit attendance to a maximum of 10 students to keep the experience focused and productive.
